One of the earliest aircraft jointly developed by multiple nations, the Panavia Tornado is the product of effort and design put forth by the United Kingdom, Italy, and what was then West Germany. The Tornado was produced in several variants, since each participatory nation had different needs for the aircraft, but the three primary versions are IDS (strike bomber), ECR (electronic warfare), and ADV (air defense).

 

With the different variants produced for each participatory country as well as the Saudi Arabian aircraft, nearly 1,000 Tornadoes were built between 1979 and 1998. One of the most important fighter aircraft to fly for Western European nations, the Tornado has seen combat in a variety of engagements with NATO forces, such as the Kosovo War, as well as operational use in both Iraq conflicts.
